Your day begins with a visit to the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities, one of Cairo’s most treasured cultural landmarks. As the oldest archaeological museum in the Middle East, it boasts the world’s largest collection of Pharaonic artifacts. The exhibits span from the early prehistoric era through the Greco-Roman period, offering a sweeping journey through Egypt’s ancient past.
Designed by French architect Marcel Dourgnon, who was selected through a groundbreaking international competition in 1895, the museum was officially opened in 1902 by Khedive Abbas Helmy II. Located in the heart of downtown Cairo, it houses timeless masterpieces that reflect the grandeur of ancient Egyptian civilization.
Next, head to the Citadel of Cairo, a masterpiece of medieval Islamic military architecture. Originally initiated by Sultan Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi (Saladin) in 1176 AD to defend the city, it was later completed under the rule of Sultan al-Kamel. Built atop the Muqattam Hills, the fortress provides a sweeping panoramic view of Cairo’s skyline.
Inside the citadel, you’ll visit the majestic Alabaster Mosque of Mohamed Ali Pasha, one of Cairo’s most iconic Islamic monuments. In the 19th century, this fortress also served as the seat of Egypt’s rulers until the capital’s shift to Abdeen Palace.
Afterward, the tour continues into Old Cairo, also known as Coptic Cairo, one of the most spiritually rich areas in the city. This historic district is deeply connected to the journey of the Holy Family in Egypt. According to tradition, they found refuge here during their flight into Egypt. The cave where they sought shelter eventually became the foundation of the Church of Abu Serga (St. Sergius).
The area, once part of the Roman-era Fortress of Babylon, is now a revered pilgrimage site for both local and international Christian visitors.
During your visit, you will also explore:
The Hanging Church (Al-Muallaqa), suspended above a Roman gate tower
The Church of St. Barbara, rich in Coptic history
Ben Ezra Synagogue, an ancient Jewish house of worship with ties to biblical legend
After concluding the tour, you will be comfortably returned to your hotel.
